In-House Tax Accountant

In-House Tax Accountant

(Atlanta, Full-time, Remote)

Fisher Phillips, a premier international labor, and employment law firm is seeking a detailed orientated and experienced Tax Accountant to join our team. In this essential role, you will be responsible for managing and overseeing all tax-related matters. You will work closely with partners, external tax advisors, and regulatory authorities to ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations, while also identifying opportunities to optimize the firm’s tax position. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in tax compliance and planning, along with the ability to thrive in a dynamic professional services environment. This position reports to the Manager of Tax and Partner Compensation.

Key Responsibilities

Tax Compliance and Preparation

  • Prepare tax workpapers for external accountants for federal, state, and local tax filings.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations while identifying opportunities for tax savings or adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate records of all tax filings and related correspondence.
  • Prepare monthly calculations for partner distributions.
  • Calculate capital requirements and profit-sharing contributions for partners.
  • Prepare property tax returns.
  • Prepare local city net profits returns and other applicable city/state returns not handled by external accountants.
  • File and renew state business license registrations.
  • Manage account reconciliations for various tax-related balance sheet accounts.
  • Oversee fixed assets and calculate monthly depreciation.

Financial Analysis and Reporting

  • Analyze financial statements for tax implications and ensure accurate tax-related accounting entries.
  • Collaborate with other departments to deliver timely and accurate reporting for internal management and external auditors.

Audit Support

  • Assist with tax audits and respond to inquiries from tax authorities, ensuring proper documentation and compliance.
  • Coordinate with external auditors on tax-related matters during audit reviews.

Advisory

  • Provide tax strategy guidance on entity structure, tax credits, deductions, and other planning opportunities.
  • Offer support on tax-related issues arising in client matters, such as legal fees or tax disputes.

Regulatory Awareness

  • Stay current on changes in tax laws and regulations, and communicate relevant updates to firm leadership.
  • Ensure new tax laws are accurately applied to the firm’s accounting and financial practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field (MBA or CPA preferred).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of tax accounting experience, ideally within a law firm or professional services environment.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
  • Experience with partnership taxation and preparation of K-1 schedules.
  • Ability to interpret complex tax regulations and provide clear guidance to management.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • CPA or similar certification.
  • Experience with law firm-specific accounting and tax practices is a plus.
  • Knowledge of international tax laws and regulations is beneficial.
  • Strong Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools.
