Fisher Phillips, a premier international labor and employment law firm, is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to lead a dynamic and high-performing team. This is a pivotal opportunity to drive operational excellence, support critical financial initiatives, and contribute directly to the outstanding client service that defines our firm’s success.

In this role, you will manage a team of seven professionals, including three accountants and four clerical staff. Your responsibilities will include providing mentorship, conducting annual performance reviews, and ensuring the timely and accurate reporting of financial data through daily analysis. You will play a key leadership role in maintaining financial integrity and supporting the firm’s strategic goals. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Finance.

The position offers a hybrid work schedule, with an in-office presence required two days per week. It provides a collaborative leadership environment, offering opportunities for growth, professional development, and the chance to make a significant impact within the firm.

Key Responsibilities

General Ledger Function

  • Generate and review financial statements for the Firm and all subsidiaries.
  • Oversee and coordinate the month-end close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Manage all aspects of month-end close, including the roll forward of system dates.
  • Supervise the upload of payroll data into the General Ledger.
  • Review and reconcile all intercompany transactions between the Firm and its subsidiaries.
  • Ensure all time entries are released prior to month-end closing activities.
  • Record capital contributions and maintain accurate supporting documentation.
  • Record and balance monthly and year-end accruals.
  • Manage the general ledger year-end close process.
  • Prepare and record year-end entries for partner final distributions and bonus pool accruals.
  • Coordinate the year-end audit process with PwC and produce the audited financial statement package.
  • Review and approve account reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Generate SQL reports as needed to support reconciliations and financial analysis.
  • Evaluate and enhance internal control procedures to improve efficiency and compliance.
  • Review and approve high-value expenditures, including rent payments, trust disbursements, major medical funding, and client reimbursements.

Treasury Function

  • Hold bank authority to initiate cash transfers and set up international electronic payments.
  • Monitor and report on credit line activity, ensuring accuracy and timely updates.
  • Ensure daily processing of all bank-related decisions, including approvals, rejections, and positive pay exceptions.

Financial System/Security

  • Maintain the integrity of the Aderant financial system, working closely with the Financial Systems team to ensure optimal performance.
  • Manage and update the chart of accounts, financial reports, reporting templates, and other related system components as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Bilingual in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.
  • Solid understanding of intercompany accounting principles.
  • Experience with Aderant or Elite 3 financial systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with QuickBooks is a plus.
  • Previous experience in a law firm or professional services environment is highly desirable.
